Overall Rail Traffic Volume Decreased in March

The rail freight shipment volume across the network has steadily declined since the end of February. For the week ending 2/27/16 the total AAR reported carload volume for North America was 336,230 originated carloads. Since then it has steadily declined to 316,443 for the week ending 3/26/12. Total carload traffic is down 12% from a year ago. Up until the last few weeks, if you excluded coal the rail traffic volume looked O.K. relative to recent years. However, as you can see from the chart below the volume has been dropping for other commodities. The largest decreases has been in metallic ores, metals, and petroleum and petroleum products. Looking forward to the updated numbers this month.
