To our Customers:
Union Pacific continues to prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Ike, currently
anticipated to make landfall along the central Texas coast early Saturday
morning.
Union Pacific is issuing an embargo today on all shipments - with the
exception of automotive and intermodal - into and out of all areas from
Beaumont, Texas (just east of Houston) through Houston and south to Sinton and
Gregory, Texas. We will be working with our automotive and intermodal
customers at affected facilities to make them aware of operational changes. The
embargo issued yesterday on Toxic Inhalation Hazard (TIH) shipments remains in
effect for the general coverage area plus the expanded area from Sinton through
Brownsville, Texas. This action is being taken to help ensure that these
shipments are secured within customer facilities or held out of the path of the
storm. For more specific information about impacted shipments and locations,
please refer to the embargo section of our web site:
http://www.uprr.com/customers/embargo/list.shtml.
Operations personnel continue to move equipment out of the area, and work with
customers to secure equipment at their own facilities. With the announcement of
mandatory or voluntary evacuations for several counties south and east of
Houston, rail operations in the affected area will be largely suspended by this
evening, to allow employees to safely evacuate.
Resources are being staged in strategic locations to expedite any necessary
repair work following the storm.
We will continue to provide updates on our web site as information becomes
available.
