Michigan State University’s new railway management course kicked off this week. MSU’s supply chain management program has been one of the top in the country for years (U.S. News ranked them #1 the past two years). Staying on the leading edge with relevant industry programs has contributed to their success. With a large portion of railway managers reaching retirement age in the next 5-10 years, MSU recognized the rail industry’s need to develop up-and-coming management talent.
In February of 2007 MSU formed a committee comprised of leaders from Class I and II railroads, the Association of American Railroads, the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association, and the Federal Railroad Administration. They spent the past year developing a comprehensive 4 week intensive study program (see Topics of Study below). The class kicked off this week and RSI Logistics hosted a dinner for the faculty and students where we shared our perspectives on the industry.
There is a tremendous need for continuing education within the rail industry itself as well as for rail shippers and vendors. We congratulate MSU and the Railway Management Program for initiating this significant step forward.
