New Orleans Public Belt - Update

The New Orleans Public Belt’s (NOPB) mainline is back in service. There still remain three sections of track serving NOPB customers that are out of service. Please see detailed information below for information on interchanges, service to customers, and estimated repair times for sections of track that remain out of service. This will be followed by general information relating to our offices, contact info, etc.:

HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE TO CSXT INTERCHANGE IS IN SERVICE - From west to east, NOPB trackage from the Huey P. Long Bridge to the CSXT interchange (inclusive) at Almonaster Avenue is in service. This represents all of NOPB mainline trackage, serving customers:

  • Better Boxing (Esplanade/Gov Nicholls Wharves)
  • Brick & Block Products
  • Ceres Gulf ( Milan St/Napoleon Ave Container Terminal)
  • Coastal Cargo ( LA Ave, Seventh St, Harmony St Wharves)
  • Dupuy Storage (Uptown locations at Napoleon and Nashville Terminals)
  • Empire Stevedoring ( First St Wharf)
  • General Work Products
  • Kearney Companies (Japonica, Berth 4, Berth 5, and Berth 6)
  • Metro International
  • Namasco Corporation
  • New Orleans Cold Storage ( Alvar Street facility)
  • New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board
  • P&O Ports ( Nash Ave Wharves, Napoleon Ave Container Terminal)
  • Port Cargo Service
  • SP Recycling

SERVICE INFO:

  • Regular daily service to customers has resumed.

INTERCHANGE STATUS:

  • BNSF – Service frequency 7 days/week.
  • CN – Service frequency 7 days/week.
  • CSXT – Service frequency as needed. CSXT’s Gentilly Yard effectively an ‘island’ with its only connection to the rail network via interchange with NOPB. All railcars that were stranded at Gentilly Yard after the hurricane are being interchanged to NOPB once they have been repaired. NOPB is then interchanging these cars to other Class 1s as per disposition provided by CSXT. These Class 1s will then interchange the cars back to CSXT at their nearest or most convenient interchange point. CSXT trackage remains out of service between New Orleans and Pascagoula, MS.
  • KCS – Interchange has not resumed. Power lines belonging to Shell-Metairie remain on KCS trackage. KCS and NOPB working with Shell to remove them and are expected to be cleared by evening 10/14.
  • NS –Service frequency 7 days/week.
  • UP – Service frequency 3 days/week.

THREE SECTIONS OF RAILROAD REMAIN OUT OF SERVICE:

1) East side of Industrial Canal north of Almonaster Avenue. Customers affected (estimated time until placed back in service):

  • Baroid/Halliburton (4-6 weeks)
  • Dupuy Storage (4-6 weeks)
  • US Gypsum (4-6 weeks)

2) West side of Industrial Canal north of Almonaster Avenue. Customers affected (estimated time until placed back in service):

  • Holcim (4-6 weeks)
  • Orleans Materials (4-6 weeks)

3) Access to CG Railway // New Orleans Cold Storage in New Orleans East. Customers affected (estimated time until placed back in service):

  • CG Railway (8-10 weeks – there has been no progress since last update on 9/29 because of standing water in the area)
  • New Orleans Cold Storage (8-10 weeks – there has been no progress since last update on 9/29 because of standing water in the area)

GENERAL INFO

  • Power has been restored to the entire railroad. Yardmasters, Trainmasters, Customer Service and clerical functions have been moved back to the yard office. For yardmasters and trainmasters, please call (504) 896 7442 or (504) 896 7444.
