1/16/06 - UP: Fire Destroys Mainline Bridge Along Sunset Route

On Sunday morning, January 15, 2006, a fire destroyed a Union Pacific single-track, mainline bridge along the Sunset route, approximately 13 miles east of Yuma, AZ.

Work is underway to construct a temporary route through the area, anticipated to be complete by 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning, January 17. Final repairs will include a double-track mainline bridge.

Where possible, trains are being re-routed as work continues, but most traffic will be held until the temporary route opens. Customers with traffic routed over the Sunset Route can anticipate a 48-72 hour delay on their shipments, as we restore operations and work off the backlog of traffic.
